I have been on all sides of healthcare—as a doctor, a patient, and a caregiver. But the experience that shaped me most was caring for my mother, Nuri, during her battle with metastatic breast cancer.
She was given six months to live. Her oncologist recommended surgery that would have left her immobilized for most of that time. Instead, she chose to take control of her health, turning to natural medicine, science-backed therapies, and a relentless will to improve her quality of life. She lived for eighteen months, in less pain and with more dignity than anyone predicted.
But as we navigated my mother’s care, I saw how confusing and fragmented the system really was—not just for us, but for countless families in similar situations. Even with our health knowledge and advocacy skills, we struggled to put the pieces together. And I couldn’t help but wonder—if it was this overwhelming for us, how do those with fewer resources or language barriers stand a chance?
That question has driven me ever since.
I became a doctor to be the physician I wish my mother had. One who listens. One who respects patient choices. One who helps people understand their health, not just react to it.
But I knew I needed to do more than practice medicine. I needed to fix the way patients experience healthcare.
